The Dull ICE FLOWER
Handcrafted Scrolling Comic
The Dull Ice Flower is a ten-meter-long hand-drawn scrolling comic housed within a kinetic installation, inspired by childhood picture rolls and the haunting tenderness of old nursery rhymes. Using a manually cranked horizontal reel, viewers unfold a story told in charcoal, tracing the surreal and often unsettling "white lies" elders pass on to children—like the tale of balloons releasing monsters and the threat of police that once cast a long shadow over childhood innocence. Beneath the eerie humor lies a deeper reflection on how fear was sometimes a form of love—misguided, protective, and deeply human. The piece closes with a faded family photograph, offering a quiet tribute to lost time and the grandparents who shaped it.
